about the Baja 911
Representing a radical reinterpretation of the air-cooled 911, this 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 “Baja Prototype” by Russell Built Fabrication transforms the 964 platform into a purpose-built off-road machine rooted in Porsche’s rally and Dakar heritage. Far beyond a lifted aesthetic conversion, this build features extensive chassis and suspension engineering including long-travel geometry, reinforced components, and a fully reworked underbody designed to withstand demanding terrain. Signature elements such as auxiliary lighting, rally wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, and functional exterior details give the car an unmistakable presence—blending classic 911 design with unapologetic off-road intent.
At its core is a Rothsport-developed 3.8-liter air-cooled flat-six equipped with individual throttle bodies and modern engine management, delivering a raw, responsive powerband that feels equally at home on dirt as it does on pavement. Power is sent through a robust 6-speed manual transaxle sourced from a 996 Turbo, pairing analog engagement with increased strength and usability. Inside, the cabin reflects the same focused philosophy, featuring motorsport-inspired controls and digital instrumentation centered entirely around the driver. Engineered without compromise and executed at the highest level, this Russell Built Baja 911 represents a new frontier for air-cooled Porsche—where performance, durability, and adventure converge.
